More paper finds…I seem to get drawn to these like a moth to a flame lately. Presented first is the Kyoto-based artist Mari Kamei who uses tiny scissors to cut intricate sculptural shapes out of paper products we use every day such as milk cartons, paper cups and biscuit boxes. Using a spiral cutting process, she carefully shreds each object, preserving small portions of the original form – ‘I’m not trying to create paper cut-outs. It’s more about the action of cutting’…the repetitious, obsessive, ritualistic act that I am completely bound to as part of my own practice.
Next is Donna Ruff who I cited in my blog back in early 2010 (read about it here). I’ve always followed her practice where she recently revealed a new body of work created from pages of The New York Times. A simple visual technique that completely changes the serious context of the content from which it is made.
